Michigan should take aquaculture bait

Supporters say establishing fish farming in western Michigan will provide a new source of jobs and local food while helping the state diversify its struggling economy.

But others believe the fast-growing food industry of aquaculture faces two major roadblocks: government regulation and a cash shortage.

Russ Allen, a shrimp farmer and president of the Michigan Aquaculture Association, and Dan Vogler, owner of the state's largest private aquaculture facility, say Michigan's proximity to the Great Lakes makes it an ideal site for increased aquaculture.

But John Nelski, who owns and operates a five-acre hatchery in Muskegon Township, tells The Muskegon Chronicle high startup costs, government regulations and the appearance of viral hemorrhagic septicemia in the Great Lakes pose major challenges.
